Il calcio e l'oratorio: Football, Catholic Movement, and Politics in Italian Post-War Society

At the end of the forties and in the fifties, football became a shared and national culture in Italy since the Church had chosen it as one of the vectors of its presence in all strata of society. The Catholic elites, both politically (the governing class of Christian Democrats) and ecclesiastically, paid attention and esteem to football because, on the one hand, they considered the associative forms of sociability that were its basis, an efficient instrument of pastoral mediation and, on the other hand, they saw it as a privileged means of promoting its political projects. So the Catholic view of football was composite : a favourable ground for religious training and a means of promoting a Christian social order. The practice was implemented in the network of oratories and parishes on the one hand, of sports associations managed by laymen on the other. These channels of diffusion were gradually concentrated within the Centro Sportivo Italiano (CSI) under the authority of the Vatican.
Depuis la fin des années 1940, le football a pu devenir une culture nationale et partagée parce que l’Église en a fait l’un des vecteurs de sa présence dans toutes les strates de la société. Les élites catholiques, à la fois la classe dirigeante démocrate-chrétienne et la hiérarchie ecclésiastique, ont fait ce choix du football car, d’une part, elles ont considéré les formes de sociabilité associatives qui lui étaient liées comme un instrument efficace de médiation pastorale et, d’autre part, elles y ont vu un moyen privilégié de promouvoir leurs projets politiques. La vision catholique du football est ainsi composite : instrument pour favoriser d’éventuels élans spirituels et occasion de promouvoir un ordre social chrétien. La pratique est mise en œuvre dans le réseau des oratoires et des paroisses d’une part, des associations sportives gérées par des laïcs d’autre part. Ces canaux de diffusion sont regroupés progressivement au sein du Centro Sportivo Italiano (CSI), sous l’autorité du Vatican.
