French Musical Broadcasting from 1945 to 1954

Christophe Bennet

Résumé

After the dark years of the Occupation, the Liberation launches the time of the rebuilding of the country, but also the rebuilding of the radio. New people are arriving, others are coming back. The protagonists of musical broadcasting are not necessarily sweeping away past habits. It is certain, however, that the ten years after the war mark the radio (which is now called a " public service radio ") with a new sceal and a fresh spirit. Beside the strengthening of the artistic resources, especially by the creation of new orchestras, a multi-decade old idea takes shape: the conception of stations that are not necessarily thematically specialized, but differently oriented. Through the prism of musical programs, we'll find traces of this slow mutation 1. The content and the organization of the musical programs in the postwar decade can only be understood in the light of the context of the " rebuilding of the radio ". The emerging personalities, the policies they favor, the arrangement of the stations and the musical resources, the innovative and creative initiatives are as many elements which interact and shape the frame.
