Tree Species Classification Based on 3D Bark Texture Analysis

Abstract : TerrestrialLaserScanning(TLS)techniqueistodaywidelyusedingroundplotstoacquire3Dpointcloudsfromwhichforestin-ventoryattributesarecalculated.Inthecaseofmixedplantingswherethe3Dpointcloudscontaindatafromseveraldifferenttreespecies,itisimportanttobeabletoautomaticallyrecognizethetreespeciesinordertoanalyzethedataofeachofthespeciesseparately.AlthoughautomatictreespeciesrecognitionfromTLSdataisanimportantproblem,ithasreceivedverylittleattentionfromthescientificcommunity.InthispaperweproposeamethodforclassifyingfivedifferenttreespeciesusingTLSdata.Ourmethodisbasedontheanalysisofthe3Dgeometrictextureofthebarkinordertocomputeroughnessmeasuresandshapecharacteris-ticsthatarefedasinputtoaRandomForestclassifiertoclassifythetreespecies.Themethodhasbeenevaluatedonatestsetcomposedof265samples(53samplesofeachofthe5species)andtheresultsobtainedareveryencouraging.
