Energy consumption in multi-user MIMO systems: Impact of user mobility
Résumé
In this work, we consider the downlink of a single-cell multiusermultiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system in which zeroforcingprecoding is used at the base station (BS) to serve a certainnumber of user equipments (UEs). A fixed data rate is guaranteedat each UE. The UEs move around in the cell according to a Brownianmotion, thus the path losses change over time and the energyconsumption fluctuates accordingly. We aim at determining thedistribution of the energy consumption. To this end, we analyze theasymptotic regime where the number of antennas at the BS and thenumber of UEs grow large with a given ratio. It turns out that theenergy consumption converges in distribution to a Gaussian randomvariable whose mean and variance are derived analytically. Theseresults can, for example, be used to approximate the probabilitythat a battery-powered BS runs out of energy within a certain timeperiod
