Abstract : This object under scrutiny in this paper, namely the architecture of the Web, has seldom been studied. We aim both to shed light on it and to examine the stance that researchers need to take to study such an object. Its particularity lies in the fact that it somehow constitutes the most fundamental level of the Web while at the same time disappearing under new assemblages constantly produced by actors like Google who, on the other hand, have been widely studied in academic literature. We suggest some of the reasons, sometimes political, that could bring researchers to singularize one assemblages in lieu of another. The conclusions drawn insist on the fragility of things and put forward a different way of conceiving ontology. An ontology of worlds “in the making”, although it is not at all reducible to the effect of a performative, demiurgic, agency.
