Experimental Characterization and Modeling of a functional wall covering removing formaldehyde from the indoor air

Abstract : Formaldehyde is a priority indoor pollutant due to its carcinogenicity and toxicity. Measurements that were carried out throughout the world show that concentrations often exceed threshold limit values. The present study assesses a new commercially-available adsorptive covering material that was designed to remove formaldehyde from the indoor air. A three-step method including experiments in an environmental chamber, model developments and simulations was used. The results show that the main parameter determining the adsorption rate is concentration at the material surface. Temperature and relative humidity have fewer influence within typical ranges for buildings. For typical ventilation rates, when formaldehyde is emitted within the core of the room, covering the vertical walls with the adsorptive material would contribute to decrease room concentrations from 20% at high emission rates up to 50% at lower emission rates. An even greater efficiency can be expected when formaldehyde is emitted by the walls.
