Normes et variations dans l'acquisition de la morphographie verbale en /E/ : tendances, conflits de tendance, résolution.

Abstract : This article is concerned with the acquisition process of a complex area of French spelling, the homophone sector of /E/ verbal endings. A cross sectional study carried out with 621 students from year 4 to year 9 noted the developmental interactions (conflict and resolution) between two tendencies: to write -é instead of -er and to mark the verbal form for the gender and the number of the subject. The results show that the youngest pupils choose -é for phonographic reasons at the time when -er appears as a prototypical form for the verb. The answer -é is then progressively reused to signify the gender (-e) and the number (-s) indications of the subject. We make the assumption that using -é in order to satisfy the morphosyntactical constraint of the agreement is a significant stage in the grammaticalisation of a phonographic sequence.
