The Buddha and his Emaciated Demons
Résumé
Since the very beginning of Buddhist art, the image of the Buddha is surrounded by demons, goblins or scrawny figures. This paper deals in particularly with the late category often depicted in eastern India between the 8th and the 12th c. and probably originating from a site, such as Ellora, where the Buddhist community was much aware of the Shaiva pantheon.
