Premier âge du Fer médio-atlantique et genèse multipolaire des cultures matérielles laténiennes

Abstract : Research on the older periods of the Iron Age in the north-western regions of Europe still bears the mark of a diffusionist and centrifugal conception of La Tène material culture: the Champagne region is often presented as the westernmost facies of a more vast cradle for the origin of a La Tène Culture, while neighbouring regions more to the north and west are perceived as indebted to this area and engaged in a process of acculturation referred to as “Celtisation”. Ignoring the usual methods of interpretation, an examination of the material culture in the north-west of Europe for the period that preceded or coincided with the phase of crystallisation of La Tène material culture in the 5th century BC, throws up a few surprises and paradoxes: the Champagne region, in many aspects, fully integrates the material facies of the most north-western Early Iron Age that we would call Atlantic. Some of the material characteristics described as La Tène appeared early in the Atlantic Iron Age, sometimes even before they were known in western Gaul or in Central Europe. These considerations argue for abandoning centre-periphery type models, which are too simplistic when they are applied on the scale of a continent or to large territories in Protohistoric periods. They force us to re-evaluate the role of the most western regions in the history of the European Iron Age.
