The arrangement and the use of space in the canonical world in the Middle Ages : the example of the diocese of Lyon

Between the 9th and 16th centuries, the canonical institution evolved. The canons, whose primary function was to assist the bishop and sing the hours, experienced a change in their situation. As a result of the Gregorian reform, some regular communities appeared. Although the primary function did not change, the way of life of the canons evolved. Other duties were sometimes added to the former customs, such as assistance (hospitals, alms and charity), education (schools), pastoral care (link to a parish) or even the funeral duty such as the praying for the founder's family. Each of these duties is linked to the spatial arrangement within the church, in the community buildings, in the town or village. Thus, the diocese of Lyon seems to be a real textbook case as it enables us to study the evolution of regularised canons, the creation of new chapters or the opposition of those who did not want to give up the customs inherited from the Carolingian era, or a certain comfort, as it was the case for the canons of the cathedral chapter. In Lyon, the Gregorian reform disrupted a well-established situation as some regular communities were founded and some collegiate churches were regularised. The aim of this work is threefold: firstly, to show how the repartition of canonical communities in the diocese was progressively established in the Middle Ages; then, at the city scale, to study the traces left within the urban fabric by these communities, to study their location and to consider their role in the development of the boroughs; and finally, at the scale of the district, to examine the material traces of canonical life within the mediaeval architecture.
Entre le IXe et le XVIe siècle, l’institution canoniale évolue. Les chanoines qui ont comme fonction première d’assister l’évêque et de chanter les heures voient leur situation modifiée. Avec la réforme grégorienne, certaines communautés régulières apparaissent. Si la fonction première ne change pas, le mode de vie des chanoines peut, lui, évoluer. D’autres fonctions viennent en effet parfois se greffer aux anciens usages comme l’assistance (hôpitaux, aumônes), l’éducation (les écoles), la pastorale (lien à une paroisse) ou encore la fonction funéraire, la prière pour la famille du fondateur. Chacune de ces fonctions est liée à l’organisation de l’espace dans l’église, dans les bâtiments communautaires, dans la ville ou le bourg. Ainsi, le diocèse de Lyon apparaît comme un véritable cas d’école : il permet d’observer l’évolution de chanoines régularisés, la création de chapitres ou la résistance de ceux qui ne veulent pas abandonner les habitudes héritées de l’époque carolingienne, un certain confort, comme les chanoines du chapitre cathédral. A Lyon, la réforme grégorienne va bouleverser une situation bien établie : fondation de communautés régulières, régularisation de certaines collégiales. Le but de ce travail est triple : montrer d’abord comment s’est mise en place progressivement la répartition des communautés canoniales dans le diocèse au Moyen Age ; ensuite, à l’échelle de la cité, analyser les traces laissées dans le tissu urbain par ces communautés, étudier leur implantation et envisager leur rôle dans le développement de bourgs ; enfin, à l’échelle du quartier, étudier les traces matérielles de la vie canoniale dans l’architecture médiévale.
