Coupling and Coalescence of Localized Modes near an Exceptional Point in Passive and Active Disordered Media

In an open disordered medium, the degree of non-hermiticity can be tuned by varying the degree of scattering. Here we investigate the coupling of Anderson-localized modes in passive and active disordered systems. We demonstrate numerically the existence of an exceptional point (EP) at which two localized states coalesce in a 2D passive random medium. We also show experimentally how the lasing emission of a 1D localized random laser can be affected by the presence of an EP.
