Résumé
Ocean of the Origins ? A Study of the Lexeme salilá- in the Vedic samhitas of R.gveda and Atharvaveda (śaunaka)- This study in lexical semantics examines the lexeme salilá-, a word meaning "the ocean" in early Indo-Aryan. It aims to explore the processes through which words referring to the same referent ("sea, ocean") are synonymous. The corpus of data consists of two Vedic samhitas (R.ksaṃhitā and Atharvaveda saṃhitā according to the śaukana classification). First are presented the different meanings of the lexeme salilá- in the five occurrences of the R.ksaṃhitā ; then, its uses in the Atharvaveda saṃhitas in which it appears sixteen times. The analysis shows that the growing appearance of salilá- in the saṃhitas which came after the R.ksaṃhitā is concomitant with the expansion of its meanings.
