Ambiguïtés du leadership européen sur l'environnement

In this article we review the North American and European literature dealing with the ecological modernisation theory. We distinguish the theory that was initially conceived by European authors from the revision they adopted to respond to competing US arguments. This evolution however does not address the geopolitical issues raised by the theory. We argue that such issues can explain the political success of the theory in specific arenas.
