Résumé
Census of the seabirds of Ile Longue (Chesterfield atoll), 18-22 June 2007. We embarked on board patroller La Glorieuse of the French navy, to reach Ile Longue, which is the largest island of the Chesterfield atoll, for a census of seabirds. During the 24 hours spent on the island (19-20 June 2007), ten bird species were observed, including five seabirds nesting [great frigatebird, Fregata minor (transect-estimated N=194 nests), brown booby, Sula leucogaster (N=1962), red-footed booby, S. sula (N=1810), black noddy, Anous minutus (N=6012), and brown noddy, A. stolidus (N=7082)], one seabird at the beginning of its reproduction season [masked booby, S. dactylatra (N=73 individuals)], one non-nesting seabird (lesser frigatebird, F. ariel), two shorebirds (Pacific golden-plover, Pluvialis fulva, tattler, Tringa sp.) and the banded rail, Gallirallus philippensis. Mice were observed predating on brown noddy eggs. At sea, the Tahiti petrel, Pseudobulweria rostrata was particularly abundant off Grande Terre; Buller's shearwater, Puffinus bulleri, was sighted a few miles off the reef of the western lagoon; no wedge-tailed shearwater, P. pacificus, was sighted.
