Une histoire des sports de nature. Etudes de cas.

Abstract : Outdoor sports have special characteristics which require an approach distinct from the study of other physical activities. The purpose of this text is to highlight these particularities in order to offer openings to a social and historical analysis of outdoor sports. Therefore, defining these sports is an essential part of the work. This investigation cannot be based on the history of a single outdoor sport like caving or mountain climbing. It implies calling forth a multitude of trajectories from varied activities. Collecting these case studies makes it possible to distinguish, out of a homogeneous series, between elements peculiar to the history of each discipline and factors shared by outdoor sports. Eventually, bringing to light these common factors, which all result from their connection with the environment, enables us to apprehend the issues specific to this group of activities. The problems around town and country planning, tourist development as well as understanding and protecting the environment are part of these specific concerns. With some activities, the design and manufacturing of sporting goods can also be determining factors.
