PERTURBATIONS OF CLASSICAL ATOMS AND MOLECULES BY PERIODIC FIELDS
Résumé
The general theory of classical systems is briefly reviewed. The effect of periodic forces on two distinctly different systems is studied in detail. First we consider a classical hydrogen atom in a periodic electric field and discuss the response of the atom to fields of different frequency and amplitude. The detailed motion of the electron is described and is categorised into one of four types. Next we consider a different type of system characteristic of hindered rotations in molecules. It is shown how the periodic perturbation affects resonant trajectories, and how irregular motion is produced when resonances are too close.
