Structure of C6H12 films on graphite
Résumé
An X-ray and neutron scattering study of C6H12 adsorbed on graphite has been performed from 77 to 260 K. In the monolayer range, three solids have been observed ; they exhibit, in order of increasing density, a commensurate √7 . √7 structure (S1), an incommensurate hexagonal structure (S 2)' and a centered rectangular structure (S3 ). The melting temperature has been located at 240 K, and a tentative phase diagram has been proposed. Only one layer is adsorbed at 77 K before 3D condensation, whereas two layers are adsorbed at 233 K. The completion of the second layer occurs according to a first order transition process from a hexagonal monolayer (S2) to a centered rectangular bilayer (S3).
