Uniaxial stress effect on the 1A1 → 1T 1 transition of Co3+ in α-Al2O 3
Résumé
The effect of uniaxial stress on the lowest energy lines of 1A 1 → 1T1 transition of Co3+ in α-Al 2O3 is studied. The stress spectra are interpreted by a phenomenological matrix based on group theory. From the experimental parameters measured from the spectra, information is obtained on the local deformation and ion-strain interaction. The relative values of local elastic compliances such as S*11-S*12, S*44, S* 14, S*15 can be determined. The experimental constants which depend on the ion-strain coupling confirm that the Jahn-Teller effect is not very strong. The normal coordinates of the vibration modes responsible of the Jahn-Teller effect are found to be a linear combination of tetragonal and trigonal coordinates.
