Intersecting perspectives on two young adults with language and communication disabilities: from early childhood to school pathways to the transition towards higher education and/or their workplace

Résumé

Our presentation outlines the main elements of a qualitative study. It describes the dual pathways: academic and therapeutic, over a period of twenty years, of two young French adults with disabilities: dyslexia and deafness. Our methodology included semi-directive interviews with each participant. Their childhood was briefly described with the announcement of the handicap to the families, their schooling at times chaotic but globally successful. A focus was made on the moments of transitions, particularly in adulthood when they finally have the means to make their own choices. A focus was made on elements that they consider to be decisive in their lives and success : human, technical and technological aids and the description of their own strategies. Our analysis also examined the commonalities and differences in these situations, the challenges and opportunities these individuals will face in the future, as well as the points that could contribute to making society more inclusive.
