The instrumentalization of the poor in the French novel of the Enlightenment
L’instrumentalisation des pauvres dans le roman français des Lumières
Résumé
With a humanist pretext, the authorities who had assumed responsibility for the poor established a system that gave them a predefined role, condemning them to permanent and total dependence. Because of their lack of financial means, the poor would appear easy to manipulate. As simple tools in the hands of the rich, as foils, as guinea pigs, when they are not mutilated by their fellow man, the poor appear dehumanized, even denatured, in the novelistic universe of the eighteenth century.
Sous couvert d’humanité, les instances prenant en charge le pauvre instaurent un système qui donne à ce dernier un rôle prédéfini, le condamnant irrémédiablement à un statut de totale dépendance. Du fait de sa faiblesse monétaire, le pauvre apparaît comme un être facilement manipulable. Simple outil aux mains des plus riches, faire-valoir, cobaye, quand il n’est pas mutilé par ses congénères, le pauvre apparaît comme déshumanisé, voire dénaturé dans l’univers romanesque du XVIIIe siècle.
