LE CHEVAL BLESSÉ OU MALADE DANS LA NOUVELLE FRANÇAISE AU TOURNANT DU SIÈCLE (1830-1970)

Abstract : Based on different cases of horses suffering in French contemporary short stories (19th to 20th centuries), this article intends to diagnose from what pain or sicknesses the fiction horses are suffering the most. Analysing the narrative functions of the sick horse in literature will lead us to apprehend better the writer’s intentions, as well as the writing itself. What are the consequences of the use of a horse character – as well as his misfortunes – on the text construction? We will see how the horse, even fictional, still only exists in literature to serve a purpose, until its death. This article is the fruit of a more exhaustive current PhD work on the fictional horse and its representations in french contemporean literature: « “Cheval de papier” : représentations du cheval dans le roman français contempo-rain, de l’entre-deux guerres à nos jours » (UniCaen).
