The Outstanding Universal Value: Between Recognition, Preservation and Labeling
La valeur universelle exceptionnelle du patrimoine mondial : entre reconnaissance, préservation et labellisation

UNESCO's World Heritage concept is based on the Outstanding Universal Value, a dynamic notion, constantly modeled by socio-political factors. The labeling covers important issues leading to the proliferation of nominations which threatens today the notoriety of the World Heritage Convention. Our article aims to question the making of World Heritage by analyzing the process of inscription of properties on the World Heritage List in order to identify the key factors inherent in the heritage process, placed in an international context.
Le concept du patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO repose sur la valeur universelle exceptionnelle, une notion dynamique, modélisée constamment par des facteurs socio-politiques. La labellisation recouvre des enjeux importants suscitant la multiplication des propositions d’inscriptions qui menace aujourd’hui la notoriété de la Convention du patrimoine mondial. Notre article vise à questionner la fabrication du patrimoine mondial en analysant la procédure de l’inscription des biens sur la Liste du patrimoine mondial afin de dégager les facteurs clés inhérents au processus de patrimonialisation, placé dans un contexte international.
