Application of Eco-driving among logistics service providers in Vietnam: The method adopted by Delta International Co. Ltd., can it be widespread?

Résumé

Our paper analyzes the implementation of an eco-driving training for truck drivers in a Vietnamese logistics service provider, Delta International Ltd. Eco-driving, despite already well acknowledged ecological and economic benefits among developed countries, remains scarcely adopted by Vietnamese drivers. Since April 2018, while still concerned by excessive CO2 emission and logistics costs due to fuel consumption of its truck fleets, Delta has become a logistics pioneer by encouraging Delta’s drivers to adopt eco-driving techniques into real conditions. By training Delta’s drivers to eco-driving practices and by rewarding them extra income based on the value of saved fuel, Delta International Ltd has chosen an original path that inquires its possible diffusion among other Vietnamese 3PL. We adopt a qualitative approach based on interviews with Delta’s CEO, Delta’s drivers and about twenty Vietnamese 3PL to estimate whether Delta’s eco-driving model may be adopted by other Vietnamese 3PL. We also illustrate the experiences, the highlights, and the drawbacks of Delta’s eco-driving strategy.
