Autour du censier d'Orthez de 1536 et de l’Opération Cortes

Abstract : Land registers, cadasters, real estate records, as well as other medieval and modern tax documents can provide historians invaluable data about the spatial arrangement of a municipality. Each of these describe the location, extent, and value of parcels, as well as the names of its owner and neighbors. In this project, students will be asked to select specific documents from the Pyrénées Atlantiques' departmental archives and examine the evolution of a territory over a determined time period. Their work will consist in, first, creating a database containing records without maps and, second, introduce the succession of parcel maps (including the Napoleon cadaster) into a Geographic Information System (GIS). As a result, students will learn to transcribe documents as well as practice entering information into a database. The town of Orthez possesses a wealth of such documents in the departmental archives. It thus offers the possibility of comparing territorial changes in its land registers from the end of the Middle Ages to the contemporary period. Our project, in the end, will not only catalogue the parcels of Orthez as described in several administrative documents over time, but also combine them in a GIS platform and analyze the spatial data thus obtained. By achieving these last two goals, our project will finally be able to visualize the territory of Orthez over time, analyze its changing landscape, and, last but not least, better understand the role of humans in their natural and cultural environments.
