Development of a tool to evaluate human-animal relationships to train current and future pig farmers

Développement d'un outil d'évaluation de la relation homme-animal pour la formation des éleveurs et futurs éleveurs de porcs

Résumé

On farms, the human-animal relationship (HAR) is influenced by factors related to animals (temperament, experience, etc.), humans (attitude toward animals, practices), building design and organization of work. In the RHAPORC project (funded by CasDAR), HAR is approached through a multidisciplinary method based on evaluating work situations with animals. Forms to be filled in have been developed for initial or continuing education of farmers. They characterize work situations from the viewpoints of humans, animals, safety and the organization of work. Potential material and environmental constraints for humans and animals are measured by an ergonomic approach and an assessment of the working environment. Behavioral observations are used to assess reactions of pigs to humans, as well as the actions that farmers use when interacting with their animals. In addition, a questionnaire that uses a sociological approach assesses the attitude of farmers toward animals, the perception of their health and the place of HAR in work in order to identify possible obstacles to good HAR. The organization of daily work among the workers on the farm is also analyzed to highlight any tensions or tasks that are more difficult or less appreciated. For each form, we offer comprehensive assessment, advice based on the literature and expert knowledge, which can be discussed with an advisor. The system has been tested by teachers in agricultural secondary schools to help them educate future farmers about the importance of HAR, both for their own welfare and for animal welfare, and during in-service training days.
