Reflections of black literature: a review of anthologies and journals

Résumé
The history of black literature is plentiful in journals and anthologies. This first led to the establishment of a corpus and then to the recognition of a canon. Journals and anthologies picked up on the important interaction between the European or American avant-garde, and black artists and authors. However tensions appeared about the definition and the status of “black literature”, or more widely concerning its role within literature world wide. During the interwar period, The New Negro (1925) and Negro: an Anthology (1934) edited respectively by Alain Locke and Nancy Cunard, profoundly revolutionized the anthological form, and the use of black discourse. Indeed, literature and social sciences go hand in hand, as they combine an encyclopedic aim, employing an orchestral and polyphonic discursive model, most probably inspired by black music.
Anthony Mangeon, Miroirs des littératures nègres : d’une anthologie l’autre, revues – L’histoire des littératures noires abonde en revues et anthologies. Celles-ci participent à l’établissement d’un corpus puis à la reconnaissance d’un canon. Elles révèlent également une interaction importante entre les avant-gardes européennes ou américaines et les écrivains et artistes noirs. Diverses tensions se manifestent cependant : sur la définition et le statut de la « littérature nègre », ou, plus largement, sur sa place dans la littérature mondiale. Dans l’entre-deux-guerres, The New Negro (1925) et Negro : An Anthology (1934), édités respectivement par Alain Locke et Nancy Cunard, révolutionnent profondément la forme anthologique et la pratique du discours noir. Littérature et sciences sociales vont en effet de pair, dans une visée encyclopédique et selon un modèle orchestral et polyphonique du discours probablement inspiré par les musiques noires.
