By tapping into ethnographic data, this paper discusses the Hawaiian representations of the ocean, and of the practice of surfing, before the colonization of the archipelago by the United States. The research question focuses on the relationships between humans and nature and uses three theoretical models : the sociological interpretation of collective representation, the historical analysis of sensibilities, and the philosophical understanding of ontologies. First, this paper shows that even though archival materials are crucial to our understanding of the Hawaiian society, they may not be representative of the Hawaiian collective representation. By reviewing the term “collective representation” and its epistemological debates, the authors argue for other theoretical inputs, including the notion of “practices” and “habitus” from the French school of thoughts called the history of sensibilities. Second, in reviewing the history of sensibilities and its key concepts, the authors posit that we may learn from practices and body technics of the Hawaiian to understand their relationships with the environment. However, few is learned about the cosmological and mythological understanding of the world and the analysis contends that the ontological turn cultural anthropology may help unveiling a renewed understanding of the relationships between the Hawaiians and their environment.

À partir d’une ethnographie analysant les représentations du surf et de l’océan chez les Hawaïens avant la colonisation de l’archipel par les États-Unis, cet article pose la question générale du rapport des individus à la nature. Pour cela, il étudie trois modèles épistémologiques : la sociologie des représentations collectives, l’histoire des sensibilités et le tournant ontologie de l’anthropologie. Dans un premier temps l’article montre que, si on ne peut pas faire abstraction des archives pour l’analyse sociohistorique, en faire le reflet des « représentations collectives » est à nuancer, car les documents dont nous disposons ne sont pas le reflet de l’ensemble des représentations de la population hawaïenne. Dans un second temps, l’article se focalise sur les modèles développés par l’histoire des sensibilités et notamment sur les tentatives pour rendre compte de la formation d’habitus pratiques. Nous montrons alors que ce modèle doit être complété par une théorie générale de l’apprentissage perceptif. Enfin, une troisième partie de l’article est consacrée à l’analyse des rituels qui encadraient la pratique du surf chez les Hawaïens traditionnels et qui se présentent, entre autres, comme une série d’adresses à l’océan. Ce troisième temps est l’occasion de revenir sur les propositions théoriques formulées par le « tournant ontologique de l’anthropologie » afin de mieux saisir les relations des Hawaïens à leur environnement.
