Carbon between nature and society
Résumé
In public media carbon is depicted as a "bad guy" threatening life and responsible for global warming by creating a greenhouse effect. However carbon dioxide is only one face of carbon, which is among the most studied elements of the periodic system. The purpose of this paper is to remind us that carbon is not reducible to its ubiquitous dioxide. The contemporary concern with its effect on climate prevents us to realize that carbon is a multifaceted element and a vital partner in the history of life and of humanity. Author's biographical note: Bernadette Bensaude-Vincent is a philosopher and historian of science, emerita professor at Université Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne. Her research topics span from the history and philosophy of chemistry to materials science and nanotechnology with a continuous interest in science and the public issues.
