Le Portrait de Luther Burbank de Frida Kahlo et l'arbre de vie maya
Abstract
Through the portrayal of the geneticist and biologist Luther Burbank (1931), Frida Kahlo’s fear of death fades away in a regenerative panvitalism. While some critics saw in the painting one of the first occurrences of surrealism in the Americas, the artist herself denied it, appealing to her own reality. A reality that she composes among ancient texts, codex and archeological studies which shows a vision nurtured on Maya culture in which the tree of life, for the well-being of society, takes roots in the sacrifice of the human being.
En su retrato del biólogo genético Luther Bubank (1931), la angustia de Frida Kahlo ante la muerte se difumina en un panvitalismo regenerador. Si algunos vieron en el óleo una de las primeras manifestaciones del surrealismo en las Américas, la misma artista lo negaba, remitiendo a su propia realidad. Una realidad que compone mediante textos antiguos, códices y estudios arqueológicos y que enseña una visión nutrida de la cultura maya en que el árbol de vida, para el bien de la colectividad, echa sus raíces en el sacrificio del ser humano.

Si certains ont vu dans le tableau l’une des premières manifestations du surréalisme aux Amériques, l’artiste elle-même s’en défendait, faisant appel à sa propre réalité. Une réalité qu’elle compose entre textes anciens, codex, études archéologiques et qui montre une vision nourrie de la culture maya où l’arbre de vie, pour le bien de la collectivité, prend ses racines dans le sacrifice de l’être humain.
