The influence of The Wealth of Nations on Scottish views of the American Revolution (1776-1782)

In 1776, just four months before the Continental Congress voted the Declaration of Independence Adam Smith suggested a reform of the British Empire in The Wealth of Nations. He imagined a fiscal, commercial and political union incorporating Great Britain, Ireland and the North American colonies. The American colonists would be granted free trade and representation in the Westminster Parliament but would be subjected to British taxation in return. Smith understood this imperial union to be the realization of the British empire which he claimed to be existing only in imagination.
This paper places Smith's plan in the context of the American controversy among Scottish pamphleteers. It discusses the ways The Wealth of Nations was understood, used, and sometimes misrepresented by the Scottish Enlightenment. It argues that Smith's analysis of the American Revolution had limited impact in Scotland because his notions of representation and empire were totally different from that of most of his fellow countrymen.
En 1776, quatre mois avant le vote de la Déclaration d'indépendance par le Congrès continental, Adam Smith propose une réforme de l'Empire britannique dans sa Richesse des nations. Il imagine une union fiscale, commerciale et politique intégrant la Grande-Bretagne, l'Irlande et les colonies d'Amérique du Nord. Les colons bénéficieraient du libre échange et seraient représentés au Parlement de Westminster, mais seraient en échange soumis au régime fiscal de la Grande-Bretagne. Smith voyait cette union impériale comme la concrétisation d'un Empire britannique qu'il estimait n'être encore qu'imaginaire.
