Electron probe microanalyses of transuranium elements in nuclear fuels and waste matrixes

Résumé

Electron probe microanalyses are very powerful techniques used in materials sciences, even on topics concerning nuclear materials. But such characterizations of radioactive materials remain a challenge because of the necessity to adapt the tools to this highly-constrained environment. In this article, different aspects of these challenges are described, from the design of nuclearized devices set up in hot cell facilities, to examples showing the accuracy of EPMA analyses, or the complementarity with other characterizations tools, to conclude on nuclear material behavior.
