Sport and balneology: the medical profession and the spread of sporting activities in the spa town of Vichy. 1875-1914

Résumé

At the end of the 19th, Vichy, « Queen of spa towns » gradually abandoned its main therapeutic function to turn towards tourism. At the cost of major development work, the resort was able to offer its visitors a golden holiday destination in the country. Amongst other numerous activities, the days were highlighted by sporting events, particularly during the summer months. However, all these sporting opportunities were met with a certain degree of opposition. In fact, the town’s medical profession made no attempt to hide their reservations regarding the popularity of these new practises.
