Quatre villes pour une adresse typographique : enquête autour de l’impression de l’Esprit des loix de la tactique (1762)

Abstract : In 1760, the Lyon-based printer-bookseller Jean-Marie I Bruyset was questioned by the authorities in an affair concerning the publication of prohibited works, and revealed that he had bought a manuscript entitled Esprit des loix de la tactique the previous year. A work with that title appeared in two quarto volumes in 1762 at the address of Pierre Gosse junior at The Hague. Bibliographic research reveals the existence of two other similar publications that year, with addresses in Leipzig and Frankfurt. Material bibliography allows us to demonstrate that these in fact constitute a single shared edition, printed in Lyon by Bruyset. The edition is made up of three issues that appeared under the addresses of European colleagues, one who had ‘lent’ his name to a French imprint published with tacit permission from the authorities, the two others active in cities famous for their book fairs.
