Picturing highlanders : a half-century of photography in Northern Thailand

Picture tell stories. They also bring people together. The pictures presented in this book depict the transformations that have occurred in the highland of Northern Thailand over the last fifty years. They come from private collections of anthropologists, missionaries and development experts, both Thai and foreign, and most of them are displayed here for the first time. These images invite us to reconsider highlanders' cultures as intimately linked to, rather than separated from, those of the lowlanders. They also make us reflect on the construction of anthropological knowledge in this region.
