Organiser et conserver la mémoire de l'éphémère : les capsules de MemoRekall

Abstract : Further to the pioneering initiative of the Tate Modern in 2004, several international renown museums have developed a collection of time-based media art. This term refers to art that has a durational dimension. These collections include performances. Their preservation rest on their documentation. Among the documents collected, video recording has a unique place: considered as one of the most important document, it is at the same time loudly criticized. Digital technologies offer two approaches in order to target the bias of video recording: intra-documentary (annotating the video) and inter-documentary (connecting the video to other documents). After presenting these two approaches with recent examples, the paper introduces MemoRekall, a web application which gathers intra-documentary and inter-documentary approaches in the same human-machine interface. Video recording, linked documents, and annotations create a new document: a capsule. The capsule is a way to organize the documentation and to suggest a strategy to preserve the works. The aim is to deduce the artistic intention from the linkage between the documents and to help to establish the authenticity of a reinterpretation via documentarisation.
