Vers un décryptage des discours européens

The present contribution focuses on the creation of the specific terminology which reflects the development of the European Union legal system and its common policies that have been built in more than sixty years. It is clear that politicians and EU officials cannot avoid using this terminology in their daily professional communication. However, it is necessary to ensure that the language obeys the rules of clarity and precision whenever citizens are involved in the process, as they are concerned with the legislation and policies coming from Brussels. This accessibility to meaning can be considered as important as the right, conferred by Treaties, to access European legislation and to communicate with EU institutions in one's own language. A positive step in this direction, in addition to the development of glossaries and terminology databases, would be to observe carefully the recommendations and style guides published by the Commission.
