John F. Muth et l’émergence de la notion d’anticipations rationnelles

In this article, we wonder at first to what extent the personality of Muth can explain his analysis of the question of the expectations. Then, to highlight the specificity of his approach, we compare it to that of the other economists who, before or at the same time as he, used the expression "rational expectations". Finally, we study the spread of his theory and the critical look that he took on his contribution at the end of his life.

Dans cet article, on se demande d’abord dans quelle mesure la personnalité de Muth peut expliquer son approche de la question des anticipations. Puis, pour mettre en évidence la spécificité de sa démarche, on la compare à celle d’autres économistes qui, avant lui ou en même temps que lui, employèrent l’expression « anticipations rationnelles ». Enfin, on étudie la diffusion de la thèse défendue par Muth et le regard critique qu’il portait à sa contribution à la fin de sa vie.
