Reply to “Therapeutic management of people with epilepsy in low- and middle-income countries”
Résumé
To the Editor
We thank Job and Wiwanitkit [1] for their interest in our paper [2]. Indeed, we proposed, at the end of this review, to standardize the evaluation
practices of management programs because our review showed that the methodology was very variable and impaired the comparisons.
This will consist in using valid designs of evaluation, similar indicators, etc., in order to adequately compare the studies and the programs in
their outcomes and to combine the different studies in meta-analyses.
In fact, we did not propose to standardize the management itself, and we agree with Job and Wiwanitkit that this could be a big
problem in practice and has to be concordant with social conditions. However, as researchers in public health, we have to try to fix general
guidelines that could improve conditions of people with epilepsy in all deprived settings. The standardization of the evaluation would help in
this purpose.
