Network Visualization with ggplot2

This paper explores three different approaches to visualize networks by building on the grammar of graphics framework implemented in the ggplot2 package. The goal of each approach is to provide the user with the ability to apply the flexibility of ggplot2 to the visualization of network data, including through the mapping of network attributes to specific plot aesthetics. By incorporating networks in the ggplot2 framework, these approaches (1) allow users to enhance networks with additional information on edges and nodes, (2) give access to the strengths of ggplot2, such as layers and facets, and (3) convert network data objects to the more familiar data frames.

Cet article explore trois différentes manières de visualiser des réseaux à partir de la grammaire graphique transcrite dans le package ggplot2. L'objectif de chaque approche est d'apporter à l'utilisateur la flexibilité de ggplot2 sur des données-réseau, en permettant de passer les paramètres de ces données sous la formes d'esthétiques. En incorporant les réseaux dans le périmètre du package ggplot2, ces approches (1) permettent aux utilisateurs d'enrichir leurs visualisations de réseaux d'attributs supplémentaires sur leurs noeuds et leurs arêtes, (2) donnent accès aux fonctionnalités de ggplot2, telles que les facettes et les couches, et (3) convertissent les objets-réseaux en objets, plus familiers, de classe "data.frame".
