Proposal for biological control of Chikungunya virus by heterologous rubella vaccination

Proposition de lutte biologique contre le virus du Chikungunya par une vaccination hétérologue antirubéoleuse.

A very important outbreak due to the Chikungunya virus has raged on the Reunion island between May 2005 and July 2006 affecting 38.25% of the population, around 300,000 people. In this context of health emergency, given the antigenic similarities between the Chikungunya virus and the Rubella virus, the authors proposed through the local media and to the general practitioners the only vaccine available, the Rubella vaccine, in the context of a heterovaccination inducing cross immunity. As a result of this information, approximately 11,000 additional doses of Rubella vaccine were delivered compared to the annual average. They estimated the effective duration of protection of this heterologous vaccination against Chikungunya virus at three years. General practitioners participating in this heterologous vaccination were generally satisfied with the results obtained in their volunteer patients.

Une épidémie très importante due au virus Chikungunya a sévit à l’île de la Réunion entre mai 2005 et juillet 2006 touchant 38.25 % de la population, soit environ 300000 personnes. Dans ce contexte d’urgence sanitaire, compte tenu des similarités antigéniques entre le virus Chikungunya et le virus de la Rubéole les auteurs ont proposé par l’intermédiaire des médias locaux et en s’adressant aux médecins généralistes le seul vaccin disponible, le vaccin antirubeoleux, dans le cadre d’une hétérovaccination induisant une immunité croisée. Suite à cette information environ 11000 doses supplémentaires de vaccin antirubeoleux ont été délivrés par rapport à la moyenne annuelle. Ils ont estimé la durée de protection efficace de cette vaccination hétérologue contre le virus Chikungunya à trois ans. Les médecins généralistes participant à cette vaccination hétérologue ont été dans l’ensemble satisfait au vu des résultats obtenus chez leurs patients volontaires.
