Du poids des mots

Paying attention to words is nothing new in the realm of social science. However, it often remains superficial or tends to consider that words have a history that could be retraced. In this article, we will show that it is possible to understand things differently. Relying on three examples (diaspora, globalization and the French word “communautarisme”), we will propose another approach – social-historical semantics – in which the historical study of the political, social, journalistic and academic uses of words remains closely associated to the analysis of how words play a role in shaping reality. Far from being nothing but words, they can eventually acquire, through repeated used or through the importance they are granted at a certain moment in time, a very significant weight that imposes itself to almost everyone and thus transforms our comprehension of reality.
L’attention aux mots n’est pas une nouveauté dans les sciences sociales. Pourtant, bien souvent, cette prise en compte soit demeure superficielle soit considère que les mots ont une histoire qu’il serait possible de retracer. Dans cet article, nous montrerons qu’il est possible de voir les choses autrement et de proposer à partir de trois exemples (diaspora, mondialisation et communautarisme) une approche différente – la socio-sémantique historique – dans laquelle l’étude historique des usages politiques, sociaux, journalistiques et académiques des mots est associée à l’analyse du rôle que jouent les mots dans la fabrication de la réalité. Loin de n’être que des mots, ils peuvent acquérir, par la répétition de leurs usages ou par l’importance qui leur est accordée à un moment donné, un poids tout à fait significatif qui s’impose au plus grand nombre et transforme ainsi notre manière d’appréhender la réalité.
