Food security in developing countries and dependance on cereal imports: the role of the diet

Résumé

In this paper, we examine the relationship between diet and food security vulnerability in 53 net cereal-importing developing. Our results suggest that the increase of food imports prices affects significantly food security of countries whose average share of cereal in Dietary Energy Supply (DES) is higher than 50%. The impact on the others countries is not significant. This result suggests that diet diversification could be an interesting policy tool to reduce the vulnerability of food security. Indeed, this policy would make it possible to reduce the degree of world prices transmission without public intervention.
