Les lagunes du Languedoc-Roussillon : du développement du tourisme de masse à une réhabilitation des milieux naturels

Abstract : The wetlands of Languedoc-Roussillon, where more than about twenty lagoons are spaced out along the coast, were unhealthy spaces infested with mosquitoes before 1960s. The “Mission Racine”, stemming from the boost of modernization in the Gaullist time, developed sea resorts near the lagoons. Since the 1980s, these spaces suffer a great demographic pressure so generating a degradation of the natural areas but also the risks in certain urbanized sectors: floods, reduction of the biodiversity, the degradation of the quality of waters, etc. Since thirty years and more particularly for the years 1990-2000, new legal and management tools appeared whose the objectives were not to urbanize these spaces so characteristic, but to protect them. So since more than sixty years, the issues and management tools used to emphasize the lagoons of Languedoc-Roussillon evolved, in order to apply nowadays, in the European objectives of conservation of the biodiversity of wetlands, and in the regional and local objectives of economic development.
