Toward a Deeper Understanding of the Scientific Method of the Humanist

Résumé

For 20 years or more, humanities research has been engaged in a defensive battle, but not for lack of compelling evidence for their value. One possible reason for this seeming paradox is the relatively superficial understanding of the humanities research process upon which cases for its positive impact are made. The Scholarly Primitives And Renewed Knowledge-Led Exchanges (SPARKLE) project addresses this gap through an ethnographic study of the knowledge creation process of the humanities scholar. The results of this study revealed a wide range of strategies being deployed by humanists to manage limitations in space and time, foster serendipity and integrate evidence from the inherently complex source landscape. The findings of this study enable a deeper understanding and valorisation of the humanistic research process, allowing them to be viewed in comparison, rather than only in contrast, to their equivalents in science and technology.
