Analysis of the filtering effect of the stochastic estimation and accuracy improvement by sensor location optimization

The reconstruction of the flow behind a backward facing step at a Reynolds number of 60,000 using Linear Stochastic Estimation (LSE) and modified LSE is investigated. In particular, the turbulent spatial integral length scales reconstructed for several sensor configurations are studied. The reconstruction of the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) modes is also performed in order to show the limitations of the LSE reconstruction for complex flows, for which taking into account only a few POD modes is not enough to represent the flow dynamics. The importance of the sensors location on the reconstruction is also emphasized and the opportunity to use a sensor location optimization algorithm investigated.

La reconstruction de l'écoulement en aval d'une marche descendante à Reynolds 60000 utilisant l'estimation stochastique linéaire et l'estimation stochastique linéaire couplée à la décomposition en modes propres orthogonaux est étudiée. En particulier, l'étude s'attache à qualifier la reconstruction des échelles de longueurs intégrales de la turbulence. La reconstruction des modes POD de l'écoulement sert également à mettre en avant les limites de l'estimation stochastique linéaire pour la reconstruction d'écoulements complexes, pour lesquels la prise en compte d'un faible nombre de modes POD n'est pas suffisante pour représenter la dynamique de l'écoulement. L'importance de la position des capteurs sur la qualité de la reconstruction est aussi mise en avant. La possibilité d'améliorer la reconstruction en utilisant un algorithme d'optimisation de la position des capteurs est étudiée.
