Relationships between Text and Image in the Enhanced eBook of a Literary Work

Résumé
The French National Library, in partnership with Orange and the Voltaire Foundation, has designed an enhanced edition of Voltaire’s Candide, in the form of an iPad application associated to a website. This reissue of a classic book in a renewed format questions the usual closed and linear form of the book in favor of other approaches in confronting the text. The traditional access to content through the "Book" has been extended with two new ways of accessing content: the "World" and the "Garden". In this remediation process, images have a new, substantial importance with more than 400 sources: photographs of the manuscript itself and illustrations of the text, as well as thematic albums related to Candide.
Such a wealth of sources is based on an educational choice: exploring the eighteenth century through Candide, enhancing the interpretation of the tale through the use of heritage resources, and initiating a methodology in discovering art and literature. By representing the steps in Candide’s journey on a map, the application invites the user into the imaginary tale through twelve thematic approaches, which associate Voltaire's text with albums and anthologies, establishing an additional, image-based discourse.
La Bibliothèque nationale de France s'est associée à Orange et à la Voltaire Foundation pour concevoir une édition enrichie de Candide, sous la forme d'une application iPad et d'un site web. Cette réédition d'un classique sous un mode renouvelé interroge la forme habituellement close et linéaire du livre pour la confronter à d'autres approches du texte. Au « Livre » s'ajoutent deux représentations de l'oeuvre : le « Monde » et le « Jardin ». Dans ce processus de remédiatisation du conte de Voltaire, une part inédite est faite à l'image avec plus de 400 documents : photographies du manuscrit et illustrations du texte d'une part, albums thématiques adossés à l'oeuvre d'autre part. Une telle richesse documentaire repose sur un parti pris pédagogique : explorer le XVIII e siècle à travers Candide, élargir l'interprétation du conte par le recours à des ressources patrimoniales, initier à une méthodologie de découverte de l'art et de la littérature. En représentant sur une carte les étapes du voyage de Candide, l'application invite à entrer dans l'imaginaire du conte à travers douze parcours thématiques, lesquels articulent le texte de Voltaire avec des albums et des anthologies, instaurant un « second discours » de l'image.
