In the end of the 19th century Franz Mehring took up the Marxian notion of "Deutsche Misere/German misery" meaning the German inability to get rid of the Ancien Régime. Jean Jaurès on the contrary celebrated the German entlightenment and Frederick of Prussia. How can this controversy be analyzed today?
