Thematisation and Prosodic Emphasis in Spoken French

This study aims at examining the links between thematic constructions and prosodic emphasis, and the way the two types of operations can be reinforced by gestures. It was conducted on a corpus of 1h30 of spoken French, involving three pairs of speakers in dialogues. Results show that although the tendency is for emphatic constructions as a whole not to be reinforced by gestures, there is still a higher proportion of gesture reinforcing with prosodic emphasis than with syntactic thematisation. The paper describes which eyebrow and head movements as well as hand gestures are more liable to accompany the two operations.

Cet article se propose d'examiner les liens qui existent entre les constructions thématiques et l'emphase prosodique, ainsi que la manière dont les deux types d'opération sont renforcées par la gestualité. L'étude a été menée sur un corpus d'1h30 de français conversationnel. Il s'agit d'extraits de trois dialogues impliquant chacun deux locuteurs. Les résultats montrent que les opérations emphatiques sont globalement peu renforcées par la gestualité, mais que l'emphase prosodique l'est cependant plus que les constructions thématiques. L'article décrit quels mouvements des sourcils et de la tête, et quels gestes manuels sont le plus susceptibles d'accompagner les deux opérations.
