Levantado do chão : anacronismos e novos compromissos literários

José Saramago was able to capture, through his work, the most relevant trends and problems of his time without, however, being dazzled by the lights and illusions of the context in which he lived. In this sense, one can consider, taking up a proposal by the philosopher Giorgio Agamben, that José Saramago is a true contemporary. The hypothesis that we put here is that this critical distancing is obtained in Levantado do Chão by the deliberate adoption of an anachronistic stance. One of the most relevant anachronisms in the novel is the convocation of the neo-realist matrix, albeit with a certain distance. Now, the insertion of the novel in the neo-realist paradigm is problematic in the context of the postmodern transition of the 1970s and 1980s. The question of literary engagement and its evolution is then raised, occupying a central place in the novel (although implicitly). In addition, other anachronisms appear, invading and structuring the work. One of them is caused by the break in the linearity of the narrative due to the ambiguous posture of the narrator, sometimes adhering, sometimes distancing, in relation to the story told. Another anachronism resides in the archaic character of the latifundium, highlighted by elements of rupture and subversion. Although commonly considered as a novel linked to the past, and to a certain aesthetic-literary tradition, it introduces a new perspective on society, history and culture that will guide all future work, announcing new forms of literary engagement. In fact, Levantado do Chão inaugurates a series of deeply self-reflective novels that combine fictional narrative and theoretical reflection.
José Saramago soube captar, através da sua obra, as tendências e problemáticas mais relevantes do seu tempo sem no entanto se deixar subjugar pelas luzes e ilusões do contexto em que vivera. Nesse sentido, pode-se considerar, retomando uma proposta do filósofo Giorgio Agamben, que José Saramago é um verdadeiro contemporâneo. A hipótese que colocamos aqui é que esse distanciamento crítico é realizado em Levantado do Chão ao adotar deliberadamente uma postura anacrónica. Um dos anacronismos mais relevantes no romance consiste na convocação da matriz neorrealista, embora com um certo distanciamento. Ora, a insersão do romance no paradigma neorrealista é problemática no contexto de transição pós-moderna dos anos 70-80. A questão do compromisso literário, e da sua evolução, é então convocada, ocupando um lugar central no romance (embora implicitamente). Além disso, outros anacronismos vão aparecendo, investindo e estruturando a obra. Um deles é causado pela quebra da linearidade da narrativa devida à postura ambígua do narrador, ora de adesão, ora de afastamento, relativamente à história contada. Outro anacronismo reside no carácter arcaico do latifúndio, realçado por elementos de rutura e subversão. Embora comumente considerado como um romance ligado ao passado e a uma certa tradição estético-literária, nele se estreia uma nova perspetiva sobre a sociedade, a história e a cultura que orientará toda a obra futura, anunciando novas fomas de compromisso literário. De facto, Levantado do Chão inaugura uma série de romances profundamente autorreflexivos que unem a narrativa ficcional e a reflexão teórica.
