An Interpretation of Secondary Consolidation for the Batiscan Clay

Résumé

This paper presents an alternative interpretation of the phenomena of secondary consolidation for the sensitive Batiscan clay, a Champlain sea deposit from eastern Canada. Predictions were carried-out based on the framework model proposed by Martins (1992) and are consistent with con- cepts developed by Terzaghi (1941), Taylor (1942, 1948), Bjerrum (1967), Schmertmann (2012) and others. A simple numerical procedure for pre- dicting secondary consolidation, as well as the assessment of the parame- ters and the predictions are presented in this paper. It is shown that sat- isfactory predictions were achieved both qualitatively and quantitatively for most of the 9 secondary consolidation tests. In addition an assessment of the variation of K0 over time during secondary consolidation is included in this paper.
